Lesser-known Saints of the 20th Century
After hearing about him in the homily last week, several parishioners became very interested in the story of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, one of the many heroes and saints to emerge from the dark period of the twentieth century known as World War II. One man was very excited to discover that a movie has been made based on his life. The film is called "A Hidden Life." I have not seen it and so cannot vouch for its quality, but I am happy to hear that such lives continue to inspire people into our day.
Besides Blessed Franz and Blessed Restituta, another heroic life worth learning about is that of Blessed Jakob Gapp, a Marianist priest from Tyrol martyred in the same period and beatified in 1996.
And the Cardinal? That, too, is an inspiring story of God's grace. After the unfortunate incidents for which he is famous, he was summoned to Rome, where a furious Pope Pius XI publicly reprimanded him and made him sign a new document retracting what was in the original one. Subsequently the Nazi Party turned on him brutally. Disillusioned, the Cardinal became an ardent anti-Nazi and worked together with the Jewish community to assist as many people as possible. He became not only a Good Shepherd, but a great one. As his successor, Cardinal König, told me many years ago: "It is often when we are at our lowest that God steps in and raises us to our greatest."
May it be so for all of us!
